Hello everyone, and welcome to Drapper Hope in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo.
Today, we would like to introduce our new made-to-order denim collection, created in collaboration with Drapper Hope × Atelier’D.
Denim is one of the most familiar forms of casual clothing.
At Drapper Hope, however, our background is in tailoring. We have spent years working with suits and trousers, focusing on how patterns can be designed around the body to create a refined silhouette and comfortable fit.
So we began with a simple question:
“What would denim look like if it were designed by a tailor?”
That question became the starting point for this project.
Why Would a Tailor Make Made-to-Order Denim?
Denim jeans have their roots in workwear.
Because they were originally designed for physical work and movement, traditional jeans often incorporate a certain amount of ease to allow the body to move freely.
This is, of course, a very practical approach to designing denim.
What we wanted to create, however, was something slightly different.
We wanted to preserve the casual character of denim while giving it the clean, composed silhouette of tailored trousers.
By applying the pattern-making techniques we have developed through tailoring, we aim to create denim with a silhouette and sense of comfort that feels different from conventional jeans.
Our collaboration with Atelier’D also allows us to offer a wide range of options when it comes to fabrics and construction details.
Balancing a Beautiful Silhouette with Freedom of Movement
The pattern-making philosophy behind denim and tailored trousers is actually quite different.
Traditional jeans often use a strongly angled back rise to create additional room around the seat.
This helps provide freedom of movement, but it can also leave excess fabric beneath the seat and around the back of the thighs when standing upright. This can create unwanted folds and a less clean silhouette.
At Drapper Hope, the denim pattern is based on the principles of tailored trousers.
By shaping the crotch curve more deeply, we reduce unnecessary excess fabric and allow the fabric to fall naturally along the line of the legs.
We also eliminate the traditional back yoke and keep the front clean with a flat front, without pleats.
Instead, darts are incorporated around the waist to create the three-dimensional shape needed to follow the natural curve of the seat.
A simple appearance, supported by a considered and rational construction.
This is one of the defining characteristics of Drapper Hope denim.
Made-to-Order Means Adjusting the Pattern to Your Body
Another major difference from ready-to-wear denim is the ability to adjust the pattern to each individual body.
No two bodies are exactly the same.
For someone with a flatter seat, we can remove unnecessary fullness so that the fabric does not remain loose beneath the seat.
For someone with a more prominent seat, we can allow additional room where it is needed and adjust the pattern to accommodate the body's natural shape.
Other adjustments can also be made according to individual proportions and posture.
Rather than simply making a garment larger or smaller, we adjust the pattern to the shape of the body itself.
This is one of the greatest advantages of made-to-order clothing.
Although it is denim, we approach its construction in much the same way we approach a pair of tailored trousers or a suit: by considering the relationship between the garment and the person wearing it.
Customization Options
With Drapper Hope × Atelier’D made-to-order denim, you can customize more than just the basic silhouette.
Depending on your preferences, options may include:

Front pocket design
Back pocket design
Rivet placement and use
And more.
Details can be discussed according to your preferred style and the kind of denim you want to create.
There is no single rule that says what denim has to look like.
By combining the principles of tailoring with the character of denim, we can create a pair that feels personal to you.

The Ordering Process
We begin by discussing the silhouette you prefer, the clothes you normally wear, and how you intend to wear the denim.
We then take your measurements and adjust the pattern according to your individual proportions and body shape.
After selecting the fabric and details, we finalize the specifications and begin production.
Once the denim is completed, it will be ready for collection.
Unlike simply choosing a pair of ready-to-wear jeans, the process is about creating the final garment together, based on your body and your preferences.
That, we believe, is one of the most enjoyable parts of made-to-order clothing.
