Do you know the shape of your hips?
“Is the pair of trousers you casually wear every day actually comfortable to put on?”
“Do you ever feel a tight constraint when sitting down?”
“Are you bothered by noticeable wrinkles even when standing normally?”
Perhaps those trousers simply do not match the shape of your hips.
Did you know that there are fundamentally two different shapes of hips?
1. **'Dejiri' (Projecting / Prominent Hips)**
Frequently seen in those who engage in weight training or sports, or those with exceptionally good posture.
2. **'Hirajiri' (Flat Hips)**
Frequently seen in slender body types or older individuals.
Those are the two types.
Today, we are going to explain **'hip-projection alteration (dejiri hosei)'**—a topic recently featured in our Instagram Reel video.
出尻と平尻の違いについて分かりやすく写真を載せておきます。

(Left) Hirajiri (Flat Hips) (Right) Dejiri (Prominent Hips)
As you can see from the photos, the prominent hips ('Dejiri') on the right project further outward compared to the flat hips ('Hirajiri') on the left.
The wrinkles that appear when wearing trousers differ significantly between flat hips and prominent hips.
(Left) Hirajiri (Flat Hips) (Right) Dejiri (Prominent Hips)
This is how it looks, as shown in the image above.
With flat hips ('Hirajiri'), wrinkles tend to appear on the back portion of the trousers.
In contrast, prominent hips ('Dejiri') are characterized by wrinkles appearing on the front portion of the trousers.
When individuals with a prominent hip body type wear unadjusted off-the-rack trousers, the fabric is pulled tight by the hips, resulting in excess length at the front of the trousers and a shortage at the back.
As a result, the front hem catches and bunches up, while the back hem pulls upward.
Simultaneously, the knees catch as well, making it difficult to step forward comfortably (restricting ease of walking).
When sitting down, the fabric is similarly pulled by the hips, causing tightness around the rise (crotch depth) and waist area.
Applying a prominent-hip adjustment ('dejiri hosei') resolves these kinds of wrinkles, as well as the discomfort when sitting and walking.
As a side note regarding the rise, if you apply a prominent-hip adjustment to trousers that are cut too low-rise, there is a high likelihood that the issues cannot be fully resolved.
From this, you can easily imagine just how crucial proper hip ease and a sufficient rise depth truly are.
What exactly is a prominent-hip adjustment?
As you now understand, individuals with prominent hips or flat hips have a greater distance from their waist position to the base of their buttocks compared to those with standard body types.
When wearing off-the-rack trousers or low-rise, unadjusted trousers over this distance, sitting and standing becomes extremely difficult, and in some cases, the seat area can even tear.
As explained earlier, the reasons for such tearing come down not only to proper adjustments, but crucially to having adequate rise depth and hip ease.
Regarding the appropriate amount of ease in trousers, we have also covered this in a previous Reel video, so please be sure to check it out if you are interested.
Now, let us explain how we accommodate and measure this distance around the seat area.

You can clearly see how we provide extra distance (indicated by the red line) on the back side of the trousers compared to the standard line (indicated by the black line).
By securing this additional distance, sufficient ease is created around the seat area, and because the wearing position shifts accordingly, the wrinkles that previously appeared on the front of the trousers disappear.
A prominent-hip adjustment ('dejiri hosei') is an alteration designed to eliminate the wrinkles caused by an insufficient distance around the seat area.
At Drapper Hope, to ensure we provide our clients with comfortable, wrinkle-free trousers, we continually study by consulting tailoring literature and experienced bespoke artisans every day, striving to bring as much joy as possible to every guest who visits our salon.
